The US FDA Does an About-Face on E-Cigs

Last Updated:

Remember all of the times we have lamented about government policy on e-cigs? No, we’re not talking about our own government here in the UK. Thankfully, we are quite lucky. It’s the rest of the world that has to put up with the shenanigans of their politicians. This is especially true in the United States of America.

Whilst we don’t claim to fully understand their government (House of Representatives, Congress, the President, Executive Branch, Legislative Branch, etc.), we do understand that when it comes to all things related to health, the FDA is the boss. And for vapers, this was a massive issue. The FDA has always been against e-cigarettes (at the very least, they have been extremely skeptical, and that’s to put it lightly).

Even if you have limited internet connection, if you are a vaper, you have heard about the FDA Deeming Rule. Vapers were furious about this because of the severe limitations it would put on the e-cigarette industry. Well, it’s been quite some time now, but it seems like the FDA has suddenly had a change of heart when it comes to their stance on vaping.

No, we’re not kidding. The FDA has strongly implied that they will take the same approach as we are in the UK. Just this past week, they said, “Envisioning a world where cigarettes would no longer create or sustain addiction, and where adults who still need or want nicotine could get it from alternative and less harmful sources, needs to be the cornerstone of our efforts.”

Now, before you go and celebrate, take this into consideration: this doesn’t mean the FDA is completely backing down from vaping. It shouldn’t, either. Regulations will still be in place, and that’s understandable. We all want safer products, and these regulations will cut out cheap knock off products, like the ones we were used to years ago. The real effect will be a huge win for vaping in the USA, especially and as long as they can align with the FDA’s “goals.” If those goals shift, and they seem like they will based on the above statement from them, tobacco cigarettes will likely meet their death in a few decades from now.

Why the Change of Heart?

Seriously, we don’t have an answer to this. In fact, this is one of the most shocking news stories to ever hit the vaping industry. A government body, with Big Politics and Big Money involved, has literally almost never changed their position on anything when money is lying on the table (as we know, vaping is a HUGE moneymaker). But, the shift seemed to already be in place with the firing of the US Surgeon General several months ago, who by the way was against e-cigarettes.

Whatever the case may be, hopefully this ‘common sense’ line of thought will (finally) continue in the ‘good ‘ol USA.’
