Smok I-Priv 230W Review

Smok is back at it trying to break the mold with the I-Priv 230W box mod that is, get this, voice activated! Long known for pushing the boundaries for vape mods, sometimes for good and other times for worse, the inclusion of a voice-activated model is an interesting choice. Does the rest of the I-Priv match the excitement of voice activation or is it just a gimmick? We’re determined to find out.

We’ve seen some fascinating box mod designs before, but the I-Priv is definitely up there in terms of being unique. Usually you’ll either see a muted, sleek look, or something colourful. Here, Smok has gone for sort of a combination of the two approaches. It ends up looking a little bit like a box mod in a superhero costume, which isn’t a bad thing per se. It definitely adds to the futuristic angle of voice activation and it has a certain allure about it. One thing is for sure, you would definitely stand out carrying one of these things in your hand.

In terms of build, the I-Priv feels a lot like it looks. That would be solid as a rock. Thankfully, it doesn’t weigh as much as a rock would, but it is definitely on the hefty side. That’s a good thing in this case, as it lends to a quality feel, even if it can feel a bit bulky. The big fire button is along one side, making it easy to control with one hand. The round screen in the middle is very unique among box mods, and the buttons below it feel nice and reflexive when pressed. All in all, we think Smok did a very nice job in building it to match its unique design.

This kit comes with the TFV12 Prince tank, which we know well. It’s a perfect fit for the I-Priv in terms of look, and here they colour match it with the mod as well, which is always a nice touch.

If the aim of this design is to be a superhero, then the performance must follow too. We know this must be the aim because when you first turn it on it exclaims “Hello master, I’m your new warrior.” Pretty awesome, but how about that performance right? You’ll be excited to hear that Smok has kept its promise in this department. Raw power is not lacking, and it has a number of modes that allow you to put it to good use.

Thankfully, you are getting one of the best tanks out there along some pretty great coil heads in this kit too. The TFV12 Prince tank is the perfect conduit to unleash the power of the I-Priv. We were able to form some masterful clouds of vapour with an undeniably good flavour range. We tried it in both variable wattage and temperature control modes, and the results were equally good. We liked both Strip and Mesh coil heads provided, getting a bit more vapour from the latter. It’s a pleasure to vape with the I-Priv 230W, while the TFV12 Prince tank has been one of our favourites since it came onto the market. Absolutely a winning alliance.

You obviously have variable wattage on a box mod like this, as well as temperature control. That’s not even a question. The real reason you’re here reading this review, is to hear about the voice activation feature. This is the primary selling point in terms of how Smok presents the I-Priv, and is clearly what makes it unique. The idea is in line with so many other voice activated devices, that have given us Siri and Alexa for example. Still, a voice activated box mod?

Using this feature is simple, as it turns on with that greeting of it being your warrior. That sells you right from the beginning. Beyond that, you can do a number of different things with the right command, and you can see the chart below for the full list.

However, it didn’t work perfectly. There were times when it appeared to not hear us correctly, and other times where it just didn’t hear us at all. It was a very cool experience for a while, but we could see where some people would get bored with it too.

Smok also went an interesting route with powering it, giving you multiple options for its dual battery design. You can use a pair of 18650s, 20700s, or even 21700s. This offers a great bit of flexibility, which we loved.

Here’s a list of the important features:

Ease of Use:

The Smok I-Priv was a breeze to use. The round screen gave us brightly lit information in colours, and was just fun to look at too. Going through the different options was intuitive, as was turning toggling the voice activation. It gives you two different voice options, as well as one to shut the thing up entirely, should you dare to do that to this warrior.

Connected the tank is a snap, with an easy screw on and also easy to fill. You turn back the drip tip to fill it by dripping into the opening. It also has a great locking mechanism, so you actually have to push a button before you can slide back the tip. The idea here is to prevent accidental openings. It’s a smart feature, and the type of attention to user experience that we love to see.

The best price on the market is £74.99, which may be a little high for some. Especially since it doesn’t come with batteries, yet that is common practice. What you do get is a great performing box mod with one of the better tanks out there. You may be paying somewhat of a premium on the voice activation, but even without that the I-Priv is a pleasure to own. If it’s within your price range, then the cost really isn’t a question.

The Verdict:

As you may have been able to tell by now, we simply loved the Smok I-Priv 230W. That has a lot more to do with its performance than the voice activation, although that was fun too. That part has a little further to go before it is truly the main selling point for us, although perhaps a firmware upgrade will do the trick.

Even if not, the clouds of vapour and wondrous flavour output had us sold already. We thoroughly enjoyed the design and look, although it is now the heaviest box mod in our collection. It works better as a stay at home vape, but who wouldn’t want to show it off? Whether you are into the superhero look, especially if you are a fan of Iron Man, or if you’re just interested in a great box mod, you’ll be very happy purchasing a Smok I-Priv 230W kit.
